SONGWRITER ROW BANNER, APRIL 2016

Songwriter Row: Season Finale! April 10, 2016

Our inaugural season of Songwriter Row has encountered some scheduling hurdles, but we are on track for what promises to be a fantastic season finale this Sunday, April 10 at Rose City Coffee Co-op on Earlham College campus. RSVP on Facebook!

Songwriter Row is a monthly, all-original, all-ages concert series in Richmond, Indiana. This month’s featured songwriters are Miranda Pennington, Daniel Dye, Megan Eversole, and Allie Eykholt — hosted as always by Achilles Tenderloin.

Miranda Pennington

Miranda Louise Pennington‘s phenomenal lyrical compositions are carried by haunting vocal melodies and energetic jazz piano. You local folks might remember Miranda from our November 2015 edition of Lyricists’ Corner at New Boswell.

Daniel Dye

Daniel Dye returns to Richmond for the first time since last November’s Lyricists’ Corner. He was also here with his Miller Road Band for the very first 888 Roots & Americana Showcase at E Street Pub, back in August 2014.

A talented and prolific lyricist, Daniel’s music explores a range of themes, from social issues to deeply personal and insightful songs about about love and spirituality. For accompaniment, he plays guitar, banjo and harmonica.

Daniel’s latest recording project, Home Sessions, features 12 songs written recorded and released individually throughout 2015 — one song for each month of the year. It’s currently available on Bandcamp, along with two previous albums recorded with the Miller Road Band: Blinded Again (2014) and Daniel Dye featuring the Miller Road Band (2010).

Lou Shields

Lou ShieldsA self-described “artist, musician, rambler and teacher,” Lou Shields recently relocated from his Chicago area homeland to a remote cabin in Southwest Wisconsin.

Drawing inspiration from early and mid-twentieth century folk and country blues, Lou uses guitar, harmonica and banjo to belt out impressive original songs. All the while, his feet tap out the rhythm, with on a bass stomp on one foot and a skateboard with bottle caps nailed to it on the other.

American RelicVisit Lou’s website to learn more about the man himself and drop by Reverbnation to sample a few tunes. His 2015 release American Relic is currently available for purchase here.

Micah Kesselring

Hailing from Southeastern Ohio, award-winning Piedmont and Delta style guitarist Micah Kesselring has wowed audiences the world over, from Columbus to Colombia — Memphis to Washington — with guitar licks that slide from dolorous to dizzying. In 2016, Micah made the finals at the 32nd International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, placing in the Top 8 out of nearly 300 acts worldwide.

Micah’s latest studio album, Cabin Fever Blues (2015), features seven original songs alongside adaptations of four Delta blues classics. Check it out on Micah’s Bandcamp page, along with his 2013 release, Log Cabin Blues. You can also visit Reverbnation to learn more about Micah and his music.

Lyricists’ Corner, April 3: Megan Hopkins, Kat Brennan, The Vagabond Chronicles, Achilles Tenderloin

This Sunday, April 3, this month’s Lyricists’ Corner is going to knock your socks off. We are graced by the momentous return of Megan Hopkins and Kat Brennan, as well as a rare appearance by longtime local favorite, The Vagabond Chronicles! As always, Achilles Tenderloin will host the event at New Boswell Brewery & Tap Room in Richmond and play a few songs of his own. The music starts at 7 PM sharp.

Megan Hopkins

I can hardly wait to see and hear our good friend Megan Hopkins again on April 3! It will be our supreme pleasure to have her back in Richmond.

In addition to being one hell of a lyricist and singer through and through, Megan is among the kindest and most earnest, down-to-earth people I’ve met. Her music will make you laugh, cry, and dance–guaranteed–in the best of ways. If you have never heard her, make sure you come out for a dose of truth with all kinds of soul on it.

I first met Megan when we played an event together at The Irving Theater in October 2013, where I was immediately blown away by her fierce vocals and powerful songwriting. In the years that followed, Megan and her partner in crime Dave Vogt have become a mainstay at music festivals and venues all over the state.  You might even recognize Megan’s voice from a number of events right here in Richmond.

Look up Megan’s music on Soundcloud, Reverbnation, and Facebook. You’ll be glad you did.

Kat Brennan

Kat returns to us from Lima, Ohio, for the first time in nearly a year! If you caught her at the May 2015 Lyricists’ Corner, or at the final edition of my Roscoe’s Odyssey series in August 2014, you already know we are in for a powerful live music experience, this Sunday.

Kat is a leader and innovator in the Lima area music community. In addition to her solo act and singing with her husband as a duo: Kat & Geoff, Kat has also organized various music events in the region including a long running open mic, co-hosted a local music podcast, and currently fronts two other bands: Them Kids and The Vital Season.

The Vagabond Chronicles

Lyricists Corner flyer 2016 APRILNick, a local favorite of more than a decade, will join us for a rare local performance — the first to take place in Richmond since last May!

Nick’s intensely slow baritone voice, deft lyrics, and intricately mellow guitar compositions draws listeners into a world of his own.

Check out The Vagabond Chronicles on Soundcloud.

Wooden Blues, March 18: Will Scott, Joe Waters, Art by Aria-Blair

Wooden Blues returns on Friday, March 18 to J&J Winery / Noble Order Brewing, in Richmond, Indiana. The music begins at 7 PM with an opening performance by Achilles Tenderloin. I’ve included a map below for any  first-timers, out there. Don’t forget to RSVP on Facebook!

Each month, the Wooden Blues concert series features a different pair of the region’s finest acoustic blues artists, carefully selected and hosted by Achilles Tenderloin.

March’s featured acts are Dayton’s Joe Waters and, hailing from Indianapolis, Will Scott. We are very lucky to have these two gentlemen with us on Friday, March 18. Please drop in and give them a warm welcome.

Each Wooden Blues event also kicks off a monthly art show! This time, the feature is Aria-Blair Bottorff. Show up between 5 and 7 to check out Aria-Blair’s paintings and meet the artist herself.

Will Scott

Will is known for his distinctive voice, original roots songwriting, and guitar stylings. Blending blues and Americana with a dash of rock and outlaw country, His soulful, live performances, and his acclaimed recordings have captivated crowds in the US and Europe for over twenty years.

Gnawbone, produced by Gold Record recipient, Preacher Boy (Blind Pig Records, Coast Road Records, Eagle Eye Cherry) is Will Scott’s second release under his name and his studio debut. The album features guest performances by Jolie Holland, Samantha Parton (The Be Good Tanyas), and Jan Bell.

Joe Waters

Joe, eighteen, has played the blues his whole life. He picked up the harmonica as a kid and by age 10 was already playing shows and recording with his dad, Jack Waters of Dayton. Now a seasoned player and singer, Joe has been a mainstay of the Dayton area blues festival scene for years and also teaches harmonica lessons.

You local folks might remember Joe and Jack from the blues festival we hosted at the winery in July of 2014. However, Joe first played in Richmond nearly a decade ago at Charlie’s Coffee Bar, back when I was hosting the weekly open mic night there. I’d say he’s a solid two or three feet taller, today, though.

Niki Dakota hosted this fantastic radio interview with Joe and Jack a few years, complete with live, in-studio performances, on WYSO 91.3 FM:

Excursions hosts Father/Son duo Joe & Jack Waters

Today Joe and Jack Waters joined Niki Dakota in the performance studio. They will be performing at Big Brews and Blues, a fundraiser to benefit Diabetes Dayton, tonight in Dayton. It’s been five years since Joe and Jack Waters came onto Exursions to talk about their newly released album, 10 + 50.

Aaron Nell, who frequently contributes his immense multi-instrumentalist talent at Lyricists’ Corner, will share some of his own compositions this time, as one of our featured songwriters. Trust me: you will not want to miss this precious opportunity.

In addition to performing frequently with a number of bands as a singer and multi-instrumentalist (Blackthorn’s Bards, The Years, and Patchwork Sunshine, to name a few), Craig also runs his own recording studio, and hosts E Street Pub’s popular weekly open mic.
